1980년 5월 18일, 대운은 결혼식에 다녀오는 길에 버스를 갈아타기 위해 광주로 간다. 버스가 없어 발이 묶인 대운은 동료 평화봉사단원이자 친구인 팀 원버그와 마주친다. 팀이 군인들이 젊은이들을 무자비하게 폭행했다는 이야기를 들려주고, 대운은 그 말이 사실이라는 것을 알게 된다. 다음날 대운은 영암으로 돌아오지만, 광주로 전화가 끊기고 군인의 폭력 강도가 훨씬 높아진다는 소식이 들린다. 팀과 한국인 친구들이 걱정된 대운은 걸어서 광주로 들어간다.

On May 18, 1980, David arrived in Gwangju to transfer buses to his home, Yeongam. Tim Warnberg, his friend and fellow Peace Corps Volunteer, told him that there was brutal violence against any young people seen in the streets. He came back home but he continued to hear that the violence was getting worse and the phone lines to Gwangju had been cut. David set out for the city to check on Tim and his Korean friends.

템플대학교에서 미생물학과 면역학 박사 학위를 받고, 지난 35년간 인간의 질병, 특히 감염병 진단 방법을 개발해 왔다. 크고 작은 다양한 기업에서 다양한 직무를 맡으며 체외진단 검사와 장비의 디자인, 개발, 상업화에 이르기까지 폭넓은 지식을 갖게 되었다.

1978년 처음 한국에 평화봉사단으로 도착해 한국 이름을 받았다. 한국어 선생님에게 받은 이름 임대운林大雲의 성은 숲을, 이름은 큰 구름을 뜻한다. 한국에서의 평화봉사단 활동과 광주 항쟁을 목격한 뒤 그의 인생은 다른 길로 들어섰고 현재의 그가 되는 데 큰 영향을 주었다.

David has a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from Temple University Medical School. For more than thirty-five years he has been developing tests for human diseases, particularly infectious diseases. He has worked for multiple companies, large and small, in various positions and has developed extensive knowledge concerning the design, development and commercialization of in vitro diagnostic tests and instrumentation.

David first arrived in Korea in April of 1978 as a Peace Corps volunteer. His Korean name is Im Dae-oon, which was given by his Korean teachers when he first came to Korea. In Korean, his family name, Im, means "Forest," and his given name, Dae-oon, means "big cloud." After he witnessed the Gwangju Uprising, it opened up to a new path and shaped him into who he is now.

캐나다에서 2001년 처음 한국에 온 후 한국의 현대사에 매료되어, 광주항쟁 관련 자료를 열정적으로 연구했다. 2006년 온라인 포럼에서 데이비드 돌린저의 이름을 보고 그가 당시 광주에 있었던 평화봉사단원임을 알았다. 두 사람은 광주항쟁 이야기를 나누며 친분이 깊어졌고, 회고록 집필을 함께 하게 된다. 블로그 〈것츠 오브 파퓰러 필링 Gusts of Popular Feeling〉에 2005년부터 한국의 역사, 사회, 문화에 대해 쓰고 있으며, 워싱턴 대학에서 한국학 석사과정을 밟았다. 최근에는 1970년대 한국의 청년문화에 대해 쓰고 있다.

Originally hailing from Canada, Matt VanVolkenburg first arrived in Korea in 2001. Fascated by Korea's modern history, in 2005 he began writing about Korean history, society, and culture on his blog, Gusts of Popular Feeling. More recently, he supplemented his history degree with an MA in Korean Studies from the University of Washington and is currently researching 1970s Korean youth culture. Having read voraciously about the Gwangju Uprising since 2001, Matt immediately recognized David's name when they met in an online forum in 2006, and the seeds of this book were first planted when they finally met in person seven years later.

전남대학교 사회학과를 졸업하고 서울대학교 대학원을 거쳐서 미국 켄터키대학에서 사회학으로 박사과정을 수료했다. 1980년 광주항쟁 당시 기폭제 역할을 했던 전남대학교 총학생회에서 학술부장으로 활동했다. 5.18기념재단 비상임연구위원을 역임했고, 「광주항쟁과 초국적 후원망」, 「라틴 아메리카의 민주화와 이행기 정의」 등의 논문을 발표했다. 번역서로 폴 코트라이트 『5.18 푸른 눈의 증인』, 욘 엘스터 『이행기 정의 : 역사적 관점』 등이 있다.

광주항쟁 해외 기록물을 발굴, 수집, 분석하던 중 당시 평화봉사단원 청년 네 명이 목격하고 남긴 기록을 확인하고, 이들을 찾아 나섰다. 팀 원버그는 일찍 세상을 떠났으나 다른 두 사람 데이비드 돌린저, 폴 코트라이트와 연락이 닿았고, 이것을 계기로 폴 코트라이트의 회고록에 이어 데이비드 돌린저의 회고록을 번역하게 되었다.

Graduated from the Department of Sociology at Chonnam National University, attended the Graduate School of Seoul National University, and completed his doctoral coursework in Sociology at the University of Kentucky. During the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, he served as the Academic Director of the Chonnam National University Student Council, which played a catalytic role. He has served as a non-resident research fellow at the May 18 Memorial Foundation and published papers such as 'The Gwangju Uprising and Transnational Support Networks' and 'Democratization and Transitional Justice in Latin America'. His translations include Paul Courtright’s Witnessing Gwangju and Jon Elster’s Transitional Justice in Historical Perspective. While excavating, collecting, and analyzing overseas archives of the Gwangju Uprising, he discovered records left by four young Peace Corps volunteers who witnessed the events and set out to find them. Although Tim Warnberg passed away early, he was able to contact the other two, David Lee Dolinger and Paul Courtright. This contact led him to translate Paul Courtright’s memoir, followed by David Lee Dolinger's memoir.

While the Gwangju Uprising occurred in Korea in 1980, it is not the only such incident in history. It had occurred before and has been repeated with different names in different countries in the decades since. By telling David’s story of what he witnessed and learned during the Gwangju Uprising, we hope to raise awareness and contribute to preventing such history from being repeated.
